What Makes a Customer Conversation Useful for AI Training?

Not every customer conversation is equally useful for improving an AI system. A high-quality training example usually has a clear problem, enough context to understand the situation, a reliable resolution and an indication of what the AI or employee did correctly or incorrectly.
Useful examples may include difficult edge cases as well as common requests. If a model only sees straightforward conversations, it may perform poorly when a customer changes topics, provides incomplete information, becomes frustrated or asks for an exception.
Annotations can add structure. Reviewers may label the customer’s intent, mark a wrong response, identify the correct policy, record whether escalation was needed or write an improved answer. These labels help teams evaluate whether a system is learning the behavior they actually want.
Privacy and data governance remain essential. Personal information should only be reused according to the organization’s policies, permissions and legal obligations. Better AI depends not only on more data, but on better-managed data.
