Customer conversations can contain names, addresses, payment details, health information, account credentials and other sensitive data. When organizations use these conversations to operate or improve AI systems, privacy cannot be treated as a secondary technical issue.
Teams should understand what data is collected, why it is needed, where it is stored, who can access it and how long it is retained. Information that is not necessary for training or evaluation should be removed or protected where possible.
Access controls and clear governance are especially important when conversation data is shared across vendors, analytics systems or model providers. Organizations may also need different rules for different regions, industries and data types.
Responsible AI programs make data handling visible to the people building and supervising customer-service systems. Better model performance is valuable, but it should not depend on careless use of customer information.
